Q&A: I want to serve in the Army and continue my culinary education?
Question by Shawn G: I want to serve in the Army and continue my culinary education?
I have a kid from my hometown who is rated the number one cook in the military. He has made it far, cooking for kings of other ocuntries and our President.
My loyalties are country #1 and my culinary career #2. I saw on the site that the Army competes every year in the Culinary Olympics and The Culinary World Cup and have a culinary team.
Some people in this forum have told me that if you are a cook in the Army it won’t carry anymore weight than working at McDonalds and it is dead end. No future.
can someone with some actual first hand knowledge share in detail what they know about MOS Food Service Specialist. I was also consdiering Hospital Food Service Specialist. They say you get more into nutrition and diet more so than just Food Service Spec. I see they are in heavy deman for these slots in the Army (thus I’m sure the large bonus they offer-which plays no role in my choice-although it is a perk). Any advice?

It is what you make of it. If you approach it as a “job” then it’s not going to do much.
But-
If you approach it as a career (or career enhancement tool), then you can go far!!
You will be encouraged to pursue your education, and grow and learn to be the subject matter expert in your field.
Go for it!!
The Army Culinary team is very prestigious, and they compete all over the country and overseas in major culinary competitions. You can learn the Hospital Food Service stuff as a regular cook also, so that’s up to you.

Memory Upgrading for Sony rs320?

Question by Jon P: Memory Upgrading for Sony rs320?
The current system has 4 sticks of 256mb DDR pc2700 @ 333Mhz. I’m wondering what my options are, my slots will not take 1 gb sticks, so I can max out with 4 x 512. Can I use pc3200 @ 400 Mhz?
I think I can and that it is backwards compatible, but then I see all these other things, like single or double sided, high and low density, voltage of 2.5 and 2.6. CL ratings 2 to 6, all of which complicates the solution.
I’m looking at this faster ram, not cause of the speed, as I understand my sysyem, unless overclocked, will restrict it back to 333Mhz. But the reason I’m looking at this is cause of a deal I saw on Newegg. Thoughts on Crucial memory? Thanks for your time and effort/responses in advance, have a great day.
Jon
P.S. Bonus question, lol. I know that I have to use DDR memory for memory upgrading, but can I use higher DDR2 or 3 on Video card memory and still be compatible? Thanks again, later.

Sign now or wait till oct. 1 st.?
Question by flemishrabit: Sign now or wait till oct. 1 st.?
Im supposed to go down to Meps on wed. to pick my MOS (already did everything else asvab and physical)and sign up but i feel like i will get the short end of the stick, not get a bonus or a small bonus and perhaps not get the slot i want since its end of the year, i feel like it might be smarter to wait 2 weeks and then sign up on Oct. 1 since there would be a greater chance of getting what i want with reset of year , is my thinking rational, should i just wait or will it not make a difference, Any feedback much appreciated.

Army contract RENO question.?
Question by The Joker: Army contract RENO question.?
Hey, I need some help and hope you can give me an answer.
I signed up for the Army and am currently in DEP. I got a 7k bonus, but the job is what I am not happy with. I want to reno my contract and choose another job. They pushed me into an MOS that I don’t want (alot of bs about what the job is really about). I told my recruiter that I want another job, but he said that I will lose my bonus if I RENO my contract. Is that true? If I choose another job that also offers a bonus? I also wanted airborne, but they said no slots are available and I know that its going to be hard getting into airborne school without it in my contract. So far I got screwed and alot of BS info and promises from my recruiter and the MEPS counselor. I’m trying to find out the truth, so they don’t screw me again. Please help me out. Thanks in advance!!!!!!

Lets assume you went active duty.
The bonuses are based on alot of things. One is the job you choose, so to answer your question yes you will loose your bonus but if you choose another MOS that has one you will get it.
You can go to Airborne pretty much at anytime during your military career. All you have to do in put in a request for it and you will get it.
If you didnt’ want the job you where offered then why did you sign the contract. You can always get up from the table.

Q&A: I’m trying to filter the word “casino” from my yahoo email, but it never works! WHY!!!?

Question by snizzay: I’m trying to filter the word “casino” from my yahoo email, but it never works! WHY!!!?
I have tried everything to get this casino0120.net to stop emailing me. Nothing is working. Today alone I have gotten 4 emails from them and it is only 10:30AM. Yesterday I set up a filter to move emails containing the word “casino” in the header, subject, or body to my trash. Today I see that it clearly doesn’t work. The contents of the emails are always in text format so it should be blocking this.. What is the deal here. Below I have copied and pasted the “body” of one of the emails. The word casino is in the body, but still wasn’t filtered.

Blocking the email addresses or domains is not an option because every single email is from a different domain and address.
Oh my god, I am soooo not advertising for this website. And please understand I can not block any of these addresses. It would be pointless because they are different every time as I stated above.

Sorry for answering with a question… So it doesn’t go into your bulk folder?
If not, why not “check mark” the box in front of the senders name and click “Spam”
This should prompt this message:
“The senders of the messages were added to your blocked addresses list. ”
This will work as long as it’s not a slightly different version of the senders email each time.
…Or, is this your slick technique to advertise for casino85.net???

Nintendo DS storage devices?
Question by Sara: Nintendo DS storage devices?
I’m getting a DS and want to buy a storage device, but I’m a little overwhelmed by the variety of choices. I really just want to run a few homebrew programs (specifically DSOrganize) and some DS roms. If it could play GBA or maybe even some SNES roms, that would be a nice bonus. Any suggestions?
Also, if anyone could clear up whether slot-1 devices require you to buy a separate memory stick, I would appreciate it.

Well if you want the most bang for your buck get this one
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.11811
called an acekard 2.1 thats middle priced one that works well for homebrew and nds.
Let me clear some things up… Slot 1 carts cannot play gba. Not even with an emulator. They just can’t not right hardware. But they can play nds roms and some snes emulators and roms. They can also play gb and gba just not gba.
all nds storage devices need external memory (micro sd cards.)
acekard can handle homebrew well also.
if you want to play gba games get a slot-2 device. (not very familiar with them)
heres some emulator reviews

Q&A: Video Card buying help?

Question by K-Mart: Video Card buying help?
I was looking into purchasing this video card
http://www.canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowProduct&cmd=pd&pid=019988&cid=999.243.390
It will work with my DG31PR motherboard right. With the exception of the HDMI audio?
My understanding is that I can use a PCI express 2.0 card in my PCI 1.1 express slot, although it won’t gain all of the bonuses it would have with a 2.0 slot.
Thanks for the help Sparepillow

Correct, it’s compatible. A suggestion though; if you’re gonna use it for gaming considering looking for a GDDR3 version if it exists.
I had a browse through the site and saw the 9600GSO cheaper than the 9500GT (before re-bate). It’s a much better card than the 9500GT.

Crosstrain/Conditional release/Pararescue…?
Question by Eric: Crosstrain/Conditional release/Pararescue…?
Currently in the Air Force reserves.
In critically manned afsc and received sign on bonus.
Would like to do Pararescue.
Using the above information, could anyone advise me on how best to go about this? I know about the cross training length of time minimum for a 6 year enlistee, and as I’ve been in just barely two years, I’d rather go about it differently if such options exist.
A friend in a similar situation is being conditionally released this month and has an an AD slot for SERE. I don’t know much about Conditional Releases but that sounds too good to be true. I would prefer to remain a reservist, but would be willing to go AD if it was the fastest way to get a slot. He also did not receive a sign on bonus(as i did) so that could possibly alter his/my units willingness to release him.
I’m assuming the hardest part would be getting the slot itself, as a prior service i realize I’d be far from a priority. I’ve read that reserve units do not differentiate between nps and prior service when it comes to receiving slots, can anyone verify that?
Thanks for any and all advice, in advance.

1. The first question is, do you want to be an active duty PJ or a reserve/national guard pj ?
There are two separte paths there
2. To get a reserve/guard slot, you have to do it through the PJ reserve/guard unit
IE: you have to get their approval first, they set their own standards, different than active duty standards
And there must be an open slot in the resereve PJ unit
And of course, you have to live close enough to the unit to make drill
3. Yes, getting a bonus can and will effect you applying for retraining or for a release from the reserves
At the minimum, you have to pay back the bonus first at a prorated basis.
4. And of course, it is entirely up to your reserve unit commander, whether they want to release you to another reserve unit to retrain or release you to try and enlist as prior service on active duty.
5. Also, you will have to be a 5 level, before you can do either
6. if you go active and washout, you will be released from active duty — IE: you do not get to stay on active duty and retrain to another AFSC or do your current AFSC on active duty
