Q&A: I want to serve in the Army and continue my culinary education?

Question by Shawn G: I want to serve in the Army and continue my culinary education?
I have a kid from my hometown who is rated the number one cook in the military. He has made it far, cooking for kings of other ocuntries and our President.
My loyalties are country #1 and my culinary career #2. I saw on the site that the Army competes every year in the Culinary Olympics and The Culinary World Cup and have a culinary team.
Some people in this forum have told me that if you are a cook in the Army it won’t carry anymore weight than working at McDonalds and it is dead end. No future.
can someone with some actual first hand knowledge share in detail what they know about MOS Food Service Specialist. I was also consdiering Hospital Food Service Specialist. They say you get more into nutrition and diet more so than just Food Service Spec. I see they are in heavy deman for these slots in the Army (thus I’m sure the large bonus they offer-which plays no role in my choice-although it is a perk). Any advice?

It is what you make of it. If you approach it as a “job” then it’s not going to do much.
But-
If you approach it as a career (or career enhancement tool), then you can go far!!

You will be encouraged to pursue your education, and grow and learn to be the subject matter expert in your field.

Go for it!!

The Army Culinary team is very prestigious, and they compete all over the country and overseas in major culinary competitions. You can learn the Hospital Food Service stuff as a regular cook also, so that’s up to you.

Army contract RENO question.?

Question by The Joker: Army contract RENO question.?
Hey, I need some help and hope you can give me an answer.
I signed up for the Army and am currently in DEP. I got a 7k bonus, but the job is what I am not happy with. I want to reno my contract and choose another job. They pushed me into an MOS that I don’t want (alot of bs about what the job is really about). I told my recruiter that I want another job, but he said that I will lose my bonus if I RENO my contract. Is that true? If I choose another job that also offers a bonus? I also wanted airborne, but they said no slots are available and I know that its going to be hard getting into airborne school without it in my contract. So far I got screwed and alot of BS info and promises from my recruiter and the MEPS counselor. I’m trying to find out the truth, so they don’t screw me again. Please help me out. Thanks in advance!!!!!!

Lets assume you went active duty.

The bonuses are based on alot of things. One is the job you choose, so to answer your question yes you will loose your bonus but if you choose another MOS that has one you will get it.

You can go to Airborne pretty much at anytime during your military career. All you have to do in put in a request for it and you will get it.

If you didnt’ want the job you where offered then why did you sign the contract. You can always get up from the table.

Army Recruiters please help?

slots bonuses

Question by Artilleryman: Army Recruiters please help?
I went to MEPS last week and I passed the physicals and everything, but turns out they were out of slots for the job that I wanted(Infantry) in the time frame that I wanted.

At this point, I don’t care how long I enlist for, just as long as I get 31B Military Police. Do you think I can find an open slot for MP training before June? I don’t care about the bonuses or contract length or anything. I just want to be an MP and I need to ship out before June because my apartment lease runs out June 3rd.

Thanks!

Answer by j money
there is no way to tell when you will be able to ship out. even though your in a tough postion i wouldnt rush it. this job that you pick will be what you are doing for the next 4 years or so. just make sure it is exactly what you want to do. if they dont have what you want dont sign anything. a slot for your job will come open sooner than you think

Joining the ARMY with a GED?

Question by Spencer: Joining the ARMY with a GED?
My Army recruiter told me that he has something he called a “GED waiver slot” whatever that means. Im temped to take it so i dont have to continue with college, its so dam expensive. If i take this “slot” what bonuses would i be losing? im afraid that taking this GED slot will really damage any opportunities to make good bonuses while enlisted.

I was told by a few different veterans that joining with JUST a GED will limit bonuses, is there anything I will have to sacrifice if i join with just a ged??!

Please help!

Last time I checked, you had to have 15 college credits to get in with a GED. I had a GED and also a college education and was allowed to join.

Owing back a Army reenlistment bonus.?

Question by Drake Wellington: Owing back a Army reenlistment bonus.?
I was in a Army Reserves Unit in which I received a Reenlistment bonus. My MOS is 88M. Since this unit is downsizing they took away my MOS and slotted me as a 92Y. When I reenlisted they put me down as a 92Y. Now I’m at a new unit that has 88′s. If they take my bonus back will it come out my drill pay or do i have to come up with it in a lump sum?

Best answer:

Answer by Army_Recon
They may take it out of your drill pay if you don’t make arragements with DFAS ahead of time to pay it back. Worst Case they will go after your tax money until it is all paid back.

i enlisted in the Army with a GED, can i still get an enlistment bonus?

Question by iamaze22: i enlisted in the Army with a GED, can i still get an enlistment bonus?
Ok so i got a 59 on my asvab which you need to score itleast 50 to be accepted with a ged and i think to be able to get a bonus?
Maybe someone can clear this up for me. the MOS i chose was combatmedic/68w. I actually havent picked it yet, since i didnt have enough time to meet with the Counselor and will be going back to MEPS to finish up, pick it,swear in, and sign my contract tuesday coming up. Im happy enough to of gotten in with a GED. however i live on my own and since the only slots open were for Reserve(i preferred active duty and am considering transfering after bct)…ill need a place to live when i get back!

The enlisment bonus would help me out alot financially because i plan on still going to college and will need money to pay deposit for my new apartment etc so i can get settled once im done with AIT.

Q&A: How the Army met its recruiting goals?

Question by up420oz: How the Army met its recruiting goals?
Bush bribes old,stupid,criminal recurits

“The Army also has put about one-third more recruiters on the street, and Congress approved new financial incentives for enlistees, including signing bonuses for some slots of as much as $ 40,000. The Army also began allowing people as old as 42 to enter the service; the maximum age previously was 35.
The Army also has accepted a larger number of recruits whose score on a standardized aptitude test is at the lower end of the acceptable range, and it has granted waivers to permit the enlistment of people with criminal records that otherwise would disqualify them. The Army says it does not grant waivers if there is a pattern of criminal misconduct or for convictions of drug trafficking or any sexually violent crimes.”

Doesn’t this sound just like the organization that YOU would want to represent your country, or have your kids involved with?

Army enlistment woes(GED, AIMS Test, Enlistment Bonuses)?

slots bonuses

Question by Joseph Ducreux: Army enlistment woes(GED, AIMS Test, Enlistment Bonuses)?
I’m 17 and about to get my GED soon. My score was 82 on the ASVAB/AFQT. I’m not really worried about whether or not the the Army has any GED slots left, but I do have some questions. What is the AIMS test at MEPS like? I know that it’s a moral test with no right or wrong answers, but I’ve heard that people still flunk it. Can anyone who has taken the test before shed some light on it for me? I’d also like to know how exactly the physical at MEPS is done. Does the doctor make you run in place for a set amount of time or lift weights, or perhaps he makes you turn your head and cough to check for any hernias? With a GED and an ASVAB/AFQT score of 82, am I eligible for any enlistment bonuses? Is it possible for jump school to be GUARANTEED in my contract and also my first duty station? I’m looking to enlist as an 11X and be an airborne 11B, stationed in Vicenza Italy or perhaps somewhere in Germany as part of the 173rd Airborne. I have no physical DQs and have no criminal record, no previous misdemeanors or felonies, no traffic tickets or anything, and I have no history of drug use/abuse. I’ve spoken to a recruiter before and have had some basic paperwork done, along with taking my ASVAB/AFQT.

Thank you everyone for your help in advance.
I’m also shortsighted, and I’ll have to wear the BCGs are basic, but does anyone know when I will get issued the BCGs?
Typo* I meant to say at basic, and not are.

I don’t remember the AIMS test, so I can’t help you.

A GED restricts some things in your contract, you will have to ask your recruiter as to what.

Yes, Parachutists School (Airborne School) can be guaranteed in a contract, mine was. Having a GED may prevent that.

When you ship off to basic, before actual basic training starts, you will be at what’s known as a “Hold Over” battalion. You will be bored out of your skull. While here, they will do your physicals, give you your shots, get your paper work filled out, and issue you your glasses. You will have you glasses before actual basic training starts. You will keep your civilian glasses (if you have any) until you get the military ones. You will be in holdover anywhere from 14-45 days.

The MEPS physical is very, very basic. Turn your head and cough, touch your toes, lift a 20lb weight over your head once, things like that. Unless you have a fairly serious physical or mental disability, you’ll pass.

REMEMBER: If it isn’t in your contract, IT DOES NOT EXIST! The recruiter may tell you that you can volunteer for Airborne school in basic, that NEVER happens. The guy at MEPS told me he couldn’t give me an Airborne contract, I told him I wouldn’t sign up till he could, and to call me when one was available. He called two days later.

Sadly, like I said, your GED changes your enlistment options. You need to talk to your recruiter. Good luck.

Any Army recruiters here?? QUick question about bonuses!!?

Question by Mike R: Any Army recruiters here?? QUick question about bonuses!!?
Everyone is eligible to obtain the 20k enlistment bonus for leaving within 30 days of signing right? In my case about a week.

I understand most MOS’s that need people get bonuses because their needed to fill slots, but this doesnt matter what job you choose or anything like that right? I am trying to get 11x airborne and apply for Ranger while I am in.

Also I understand 11x is eligible for up to 14k, and airborne is an additional 4k, so am I right in thinking I should receive a 38k bonus total when negotiating my contract?

I had a few criminal cases but all were Noli Prossed and I am a GED with 16 college credit hours….if that helps.
To Sarah

All of my charges were Noli Prossed which mean not guilty. So in other words any branch will write waivers, including the Marines who had written waivers when I was dealing with them a couple months ago.

As for a person not wanting to be caught in action, I am trying to be a Ranger, therefore I want to be caught in action. However I dont want to be caught next to some prick who doesnt and will get me killed, which is the reason I am going for the elite.

If all else fails I am going for the Marines because I know they will watch my back unlike some bitches in the Army.

I just want money because cooks are getting 40k and my ass is going to be put on the front line, I deserve it more than them.

The bonuses are great unless you get wounded and become unfit for service then they want you to pay it back.
