Do you guys think online poker is like a slot machine for this reason……?

Question by Mister M: Do you guys think online poker is like a slot machine for this reason……?
slot machines are completely random..u put ur dollar in and u either lose or u make money..say u are on a win streak that wont end, u press the button to cash out and immediatley put money in the machine and play again…well the luck is over. Do u think when u sign on to a poker site they predetermine whether or not u are gonna be dealt winning hands…ever get great hands, sign off after a few games and come back and just get shitty hands and bad beats. when that happens i sign off and sign back on and sometimes ill get dealt great hands for a long time..is this just coincidence or is it a re occuring thing when it comes to gambling…

Answer by Kevin S
Coincidence. At least in terms of streaks. The game doesn’t really care if you’re in or out. If you not sitting down, getting hands, someone else is. The sites have no reason to favor any one player over another.
Although slots operate in the same fashion. It doesn’t matter if you’ve been playing for 3 minutes or 3 hours. The RNG is doing it’s things regardless. So, stopping and starting, card or no card, cash or ticket or credit, the machine is not going to behave any differently.

Q&A: How do poker sites make their money and pay for huge advertising campaigns?
Question by Damian: How do poker sites make their money and pay for huge advertising campaigns?
I play poker with friends and enjoy the game a lot. Yesterday I joined a site and played for quite a few hours. Its a cool game and ,despite the fact I also like the socializing involved, I knew playing online was going to give me a real buzz. I also love statistics and probabilities, two subjects that were integrated into my University course. After yesterday’s online poker session I have serious questions about whether its a con or not and the integrity of the people that develop the sites. I came accros a number of strange hands that seemed particularly suspicious. It goes without saying that everybody knows that there can be very unlikely occurrences that do occur from time to time, but not regularly.
I started to seriously wonder whether or not I was playing against REAL people or not. Whether the characters I was playing against were simply computer programmes loaded with algorithms and probabilistic analysis, if the cards dealt were part of the program and if the only REAL thing was the money coming out from your bank account. All the sites have training games were you play just to practice at a table against characters in a tutorial program. Much like a videogame, and no one expects these characters to be real. So I am not so sure the ones in the real money game are all that different from the ones in the tutorial.
In the one I play there is a chat box and I decided to ask 1 or 2 simple questions and never got a reply. Once I got a random sentence being uttered from one of the characters. I tried this again in other rooms because I thought it would help me to understand and Nothing. For this reason I cam on internet today to see what other people are thinking and if they are asking the same questions. Well, it appears that a lot of other people are asking the same questions and the usual replies come from people who have a poker site advertised to their profile. The main reason these enthusiasts put down is the lack of ability of those who question the way the sites work. To answer this, I am no star, and these doubts stem from an impression I got and have nothing to do with level of expertise. I saw a lot of people’s questions and doubts being brushed away with the claim that they were weak poker players and the good ones don’t complain because they are making a living out of it. The ones that are making thousands a weak out of it are testament of the site not being a con. I, unfortunately have never met any of those people, but I have read many stories about them banded about the sites and on television.
I have read a lot of comments about people saying that the sites would actually be earning less money if the poker was “juiced up”. People claiming that all the programs allowing the site to run and all the fake players to function, along with keeping all the staff from declaring the truth would simply cost too much money and not be worth it. That just does not make any sense at all. You can buy any poker game for the PC for less than 10 pounds (no more than 18 dollars) and there are thousands of characters in the game that play against you, much like humans do. And as far as keeping all the employees quiet, if Jimmy Wales manages to run all of Wikipedia with only a few helpers I think an online poker site may be able to function quite well with just a few associates who put the site together working on it, along with a couple of technicians. And if you are earning a lot of money thanks to your verging-on-hoax creation then you are not going to be running around telling everybody and risking jeopardizing your money making invention.
I have not sayed the name of the site I played because I would imagine them all to work in very similar ways. I am not saying I know it is a scam but I am saying that I am very suspicious and I am not convinced with the responses people get when they raise questions. And if the puggy (slot machine) in the bar I used to work in while at Uni had a lever inside regulating the amount of winning that would be guaranteed, making it more or less difficult for the drunk people putting money into it to win then I would be surprised if there is not a similar process behind online poker and all the hype the goes with it which guarantees millions.
Because of these reasons where I am not entirely sure I am playing against real people and that winning or not depends entirely on skill I don’t think I’ll be playing on these sites again

Home and private poker vs online poker and casino poker?

Question by Jack P: Home and private poker vs online poker and casino poker?
Every medium sized city includes hundreds of weekly poker games going on inside it. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights countless husbands make poker widows of their wives and gather somewhere to play for several hours. There’s no background noise of slot machines, no rake, no self-proclamations about anyone being a poker professional, and no fanfare.
But there is frequently plenty of money on the table. And every player can see the same cards the same shuffle the faces and the hand and eye movements of all the other players.
The question nagging me is why the people who play online and see themselves as poker experts and profess their professionalism as gamblers here are doing it online, where it’s about memorizing or owning statistical software instead of out there where the rubber meets the road?
What brings a person to put money on an imaginary table online and trust an environment he/she would repudiate and laugh off at the hint or suggestion if the same environment was offered at a brick and mortar casino?
Maquis: Thanks for the insightful answer involving your own circumstances and why. My question was actually intended for a slightly different type of answerer: The cadre of shout-it-from-the-rooftops ‘professionals’ here.
And the intended emphasis was home-private games versus casino and online games. I probably was to vague in my wording.
Gracias,

I see 3 main factors involved.
1. Availability. I don’t live near any real casinos, but my computer is always within reach and there’s always a game starting 24/7.
2. Ease of use. I’ve never been to a casino and wouldn’t know what to do. What etiquette rules apply? How much to tip? I don’t want to go to a casino and look like a dweeb walking in the door with no clue what I’m doing. Online, I can learn at my pace and watch others playing for a bit before jumping into the game. I doubt Caesar’s Palace will let me stand over a poker table and watch the players.
3. Stakes. Most casinos have a minimum bet for Blackjack and I don’t even know what is typical for poker tables, but I bet it ain’t 1/2 cent blinds. I’m not a hard core gambler and I don’t spend hundreds of dollars gambling each month. Heck, I’ve been milking the same for years now on pokerstars. I play the occasionally micro-stakes tourney and just enjoy the games.
Perhaps casinos have more to offer the hard core gamblers. The shows in Las Vegas can certainly be entertaining, but it isn’t for me. I’m sure there are a lot of other casual gamblers as well that like a little action but don’t have a casino nearby and don’t want to use their vacation time to find one.

I’m developing a bad gambling addiction problem for slots & poker…. How can i stop myself?

Question by Frank Castello: I’m developing a bad gambling addiction problem for slots & poker…. How can i stop myself?
I have always gambled here and there occasionally for fun but recently i’ve been going to the casino a lot more than i should and play too much online poker.
It started out with my friend and i visiting a casino near where we live and the problem was that i fell into the victim of “beginner’s luck” and won a good amount of money from the slots… (about 0)
ever since then, i always think that i can win if i “pick” the right slots and feel lucky so i’ve been visiting the casinos a lot more often, by myself. I’ve been going a lot lately and i would keep feeding the machines money with very little or no payouts and when i did when a decent amount i would end up donating it back to the casino.
and upon returning home, i feel so disgusted and unsatisfied that i try and see if i can win my money back playing poker online and but still have many losing sessions and even if i do win i just keep playing to multiply that amount or cash out and take it to the damn indian casinos.
I’ve given up a lot of things to gamble recently like going out to eat someplace nice or hangin out with buddies because i always have this thought “i always see other people win i know my chance is coming up” and unsurprisingly, i end up depressed and broke.
I’ve racked up quite a bit of debt but not enough to file bankruptcy or make any life-changing decisions…. yet. I would like to really stop this habit, cold-turkey, before i end up like the REAL GAMBLING degenerates with much more serious problems. Thanks all.
